If you’ve looked at the free agency situation this off-season, NFL organizations have snapped up veteran running backs. Because the demand for premium talent in this position never decreases, pay days just keep coming. The Minnesota Vikings moved on from Dalvin Cook, but it doesn’t look like Madden 24 is holding on.
Dalvin Cook is still adored by ‘Madden’
When the offseason began, questions immediately arose regarding Dalvin Cook’s future with the Minnesota Vikings. Kevin O’Connell changed the way Minnesota ran offensively and moving away from Mike Zimmer’s run-first philosophy was chief among them.
Dalvin Cook clearly felt that despite his use, and staying healthy for the entire season for the first time in his career, his production had never taken off. Madden 24 has been kind to the Vikings, and it continues with the former runner’s trail.
Rather than keep Cook around, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah decided to bring back Alexander Mattison and make him a bell cow. With Cook gone, Mattison is set to share duties with Ty Chandler, Kane Nwanwugu and Deven McBride. However, none of them equal Cook’s 91 overall rating in Madden 24.
Nick Chubb has been dubbed the best running back in the NFL with a 97 overall rating, and he is followed by Christian McCaffrey, Josh Jacobs and Derrick Henry. Sixth on the list are free agents, Cooks and Saquon Barkley (who is slightly ahead of them), who can expect even more.
There has been a lot of talk about where Dalvin Cook could land this offseason, and much of the focus is on the AFC East. Joining the hometown Miami Dolphins doesn’t seem easy, but Cook has yet to see a contract he’s thrilled to sign. The New York Jets have been suggested as a suitor, and playing alongside Aaron Rodgers would be a strange look for Cooks. The new betting favorites are the New England Patriots, which seems odd considering their reluctance to spend years in position.
Either way, it’s hard to argue that Madden 24 got the wrong rating for Dalvin Cook in any way. He’s still an elite level runner, and although he’s not the best in the league, he’s up there. Minnesota understands this, and the Vikings would be happy to retain his services, but with cap figures tied to him for 2023, that was never going to happen.
After offseason shoulder surgery, it will be interesting to see what level of health Cooks brings to his new team. After playing in all of Minnesota’s games last year, the process reveals he is still battling the ailment behind the scenes. Perhaps in a more run-friendly attack, he could ramp up the overall output again.
No matter how Cooke’s upcoming year turns out, it’s foolish to say his career is nearing its end. He’s still very clearly a talented runner, and when he signs a contract with a new team, the folks at EA Sports want to make sure Cooks is a useful asset on offense. The 91 overall rating is reasonable, and now Cook just needs to find a jersey to produce.
