Foldable iPhone and iPad: Here’s what the latest rumors say

Apple competitors like Samsung have been trying to launch foldable smartphones and tablets for some time now. And while it’s a niche market, Apple is rumored to be experimenting with the idea internally. We don’t yet know whether or when the company will introduce a foldable iPhone or iPad, but read on as they detail what we know so far.

The latest rumors about Apple’s foldable iPhone and iPad

Rumors suggest that the Cupertino-based company is developing prototypes of the foldable iPhone and iPad in-house, but those devices are far from seeing the light of day. Analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Ross Young reported that Apple’s first foldable product is expected to launch in 2025 “at the earliest”. Details about these devices are unclear at this time.

This comes as no surprise, as Apple has taken a more conservative approach in recent years. Due to the large number of devices the company ships each year, at this point Apple would face a number of supply issues when launching a foldable phone, as the technology is still limited and more expensive.

But what would Apple’s foldable device look like? People aware of the matter have said that the company has several prototypes on its campus. One of them looks like a folding iPhone – an idea similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip. Another prototype resembles an iPad that folds into a phone. Kuo said this year that he believed the foldable tablet would come first.

I’m positive about the foldable iPad in 2024 and expect this new model to boost shipments and improve product mix. My latest survey indicates that the foldable iPad will have a carbon fiber kickstand. The carbon fiber material makes the stand lighter and more durable.

Last year, Young claimed that Apple was in talks with its suppliers to order a 20-inch display for the foldable laptop. Of course, these are all for experimental prototypes and none of these are product designs that are about to see the light of day. Still, it’s interesting to see that while having a foldable device isn’t a priority for Apple, the company isn’t ruling out the idea for the future.

CCS Insight also predicted that Apple’s first foldable device would cost around $2,500, which is much more expensive than the current iPhone. But at the same time, the foldable devices of other companies are not cheap either. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 starts at $1,799. Google’s new Pixel Fold also comes with a $1,799 price tag.

Are Foldable Phones Worth It?

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip - the foldable device

Some people think that the foldable device is nothing more than a gimmick, while others really see the potential in this technology. I got a chance to test out Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip, and while I wouldn’t use it as my pair of headphones, I realized there’s a place for this type of phone.

Samsung has done a great job with its foldable phones and these devices open up a lot of new possibilities. For some people, having a large phone in a pocket or bag makes sense. For others, it’s about new ways to handle the phone when folded. I love taking selfies with my Z Flip without holding it or the stand.

Plus, these devices still look more like prototypes than end-user devices. There are still creases where the screen bends and they are still quite fragile. These are the things that Apple can change with its foldable device.
