Why would Italy beat Argentina?

The Italian team comes into the tournament loaded with talent from across the region, and marks its second consecutive World Cup appearance for the first time. He had previously participated in 1991, 1999 and 2019. In the last edition, they made it to the quarterfinals in France, but now they aim to go even further.

Italy are making back-to-back appearances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time in their history, ending a 20-year absence when they participated in France 2019. Overall, this is their fourth partnership. Italy have never lost their opening match in the history of the Women’s World Cup. Head coach Milena Bertolini has the distinction of being the first coach to lead Italy to two editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, she was also in charge in 2019 when they reached the quarter-finals.
Bertolini is under a lot of pressure after the Azzurri’s poor performance at the 2022 European Championships. She is now leading the Italian team in her second consecutive Women’s World Cup and expectations are high, especially after reaching the quarter-finals in the last edition. Italy are expected to start the match at a fast pace to gain control early on and adopt an attacking style of play, putting their bodies forward at every opportunity as they aim for their first ever Women’s World Cup win.

Italy are aiming to surpass their best results of reaching the quarter-finals in 1991 and 2019. In other tournaments, Azure finished runner-up in the 1993 and 1997 UEFA Women’s Championship. They also finished third in the 2023 Arnold Clark Cup, where Sofia Cantor, Ariana Caruso, Manuela Giugliano and Martina Rossucci all scored four goals in three games.

The Italian team has a perfect mix of both young talent and seasoned experience. Italy’s 2019 quarter-final saw several players dropped and Bertolini picked an inexperienced but talented squad, with Manuela Giugliano leading the attack. The 25-year-old Giugliano has the rare vision of finding passing lanes and setting up players like Cristiano Girelli and Valentina Giacinti. Girelli has scored 46 international goals in 78 appearances, while Giacinti scored 13 to help Roma clinch their first Serie A title last season.

Why would Argentina beat Italy?

After seeing the men’s national team achieve World Cup glory last year, it is now the turn of the Argentina women’s national team to step onto the world stage and try to emulate the success of Lionel Messi and the men’s team to bring more victories to Argentina in football.

Although they have yet to win in the competition’s history, Argentina showed significant improvement in the 2019 Women’s World Cup, earning two draws and securing at least three points in the group stage. This summer, they aim to reach the knockout stage for the first time, having been eliminated in the group stage in their last three appearances. Argentina earned their place in the 2023 finals by defeating Paraguay 3–1 in the 2022 Copa América Feminina third-place play-off. Yamila Rodríguez, who scored twice for Argentina in that match, emerged as the tournament’s overall top scorer with six goals.

Argentina present a huge offensive threat, and while their backline will be sorely tested, they have attacking players capable of hitting Italy hard on the counter-attack. Rank no. Their attack, 28, will be led by Palmeiras striker Yamila Rodríguez, who finished as top scorer at the 2022 Copa America with six goals. Estefania Banini, named the world’s best starting 11 in 2021, has played a key role in attack. Midfielder Lorena Benitez has plenty of experience despite being just 24 years old, having made his professional debut before his 14th birthday. There were no reports of any injuries in the Argentine team.

German Portanova is only the second coach to lead Argentina to the Women’s World Cup after Carlos Borrello, who was in charge in 2003, 2007 and 2019. Under Portanova’s guidance, Argentina aimed to advance beyond the group stage for the first time in its history, having previously exited at that stage in 2003, 2007 and 2019.
