Newcastle 3-3 Aston Villa: Emi Buendia scores twice in PL Summer Series thriller as Harvey Barnes makes debut | Football News

Newcastle and Aston Villa played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in the Premier League summer series, with Harvey Barnes making his debut hours after signing for Eddie Howe’s side.

Moussa Diaby, Villa’s latest recruit and club-record signing, was in the stands to watch his new team take on Newcastle at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Emi Buendia pushed aside Sandro Tonali and headed in before dislodging Ollie Watkins, who opened the scoring, as Villa went ahead just seven minutes from time.

Unai Emery’s side didn’t need much time to double their advantage, Buendia was in action again, firing it wide, doing a few stepovers before flicking the ball past Martin Dubravka.

Newcastle pulled a goal back just before the half hour. Villa’s high line was exposed when Elliot Anderson was put through for a cool finish after cutting back before turning the ball past Amy Martinez.

And in extra time of the first half, everything went well after Anderson stripped Boubacar Kamara of the ball. His shot deflected into the path of Alexander Isak, who could not miss.

Buendia restored Villa’s lead early in the second half but once again their lead did not last long.

Newcastle secured their third spot in securing the draw. Robin Olsen brought down Anthony Gordon’s shot but Callum Wilson was on hand to head into an empty net.

Barnes, who completed a move from Leicester to Newcastle at the weekend, managed to go ahead with 20 minutes remaining, despite not actually having a training session with his team-mates.
