NHL Odds: Rangers – Devils Predictions, Picks, How To Watch

A possible first-round playoff preview is on tap as the New York Rangers travel to the New Jersey Devils. It’s time to continue our NHL odds series with how to predict, pick and watch Rangers-Devils.

The Rangers come into this game as one of the hottest teams in the NHL, 8–1–1 over the past ten games, and on a three-game winning streak. The last ten games haven’t been cupcake opponents either, with wins over the Hurricanes, Panthers and two Penguins. In that span, everything is clicking. He has 39 goals in the last ten matches, while he has scored only 18 goals. The Devils are moving in the other direction. They have lost six of their last eight games, and have either struggled to score or contain the opposition in many of those defeats. They have to win tonight to stay ahead of the Rangers.

Why the Rangers Can Cover the Spread

Only the Edmonton Oilers have been as hot as the New York Rangers in the last ten games. Since March 1st, they are 10–3–1 overall. Why have they been so good? First, they’re scoring. He averaged 3.71 goals per game in March. That would be good for second in the NHL if that were the number for the year, and is already .4 goals above his season average. Leading scorer, Mika Zibnejad is also warming up. He has six goals in his last eight matches. During this, he has also made seven assists. He has failed to record a pint in only two of his last eight games.

Patrick Kane also seems to be getting more comfortable in New York. He has scored in his last two games, and has started getting more high-leverage shots on goal. If he continues to work in the New York offense, he will only continue to get more goals and give the Rangers a better chance to win.

In between the pipes, tonight will be Igor Shesterkin. In his last eight bouts, Shusterkin has been amazing. He has won seven of his last eight starts, posting a .941 save percentage and 1.86 goals against average. In his lone loss in his last eight games, he still had a .923 save percentage and played well, but Carolina won 3–2. He has been spectacular for the Rangers in recent times, and if he keeps it up, the Rangers will win.

Why devils can cover the spread

It has been easier for the Devils in March, they need to shoot. When they get 35 shots on the goal marker, the Devils go 6-1-3 in March, and when they don’t, they go 1-4. He needs to score, and he didn’t against the Islanders. The Devils are in the top five in goals scored in the NHL and they need to keep that production going as well. They are 4-1 when they score four or more goals in March. They are 3–4–3, failing to score more than three goals. There are more than enough players to score four goals in offense.

Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, and Nico Hischier all have over thirty goals a season, and when they do get their opportunities, they usually convert. He didn’t do that against the Islanders. He had a combined eight shots, five blocked shots and three free throws. They did not rise to the occasion when they were most needed.

Vitek Vanecek is the current projected starter, but he has not won his last three starts. He didn’t look good overall in March with a .892 save percentage and a goals against average of 3.06. New Jersey will have to do better to maintain its position in the division. He has shown that he can be it. He went 8–0 in January, with a 2.07 goals against average and .932 save percentage. It has the capabilities and the tools but it needs to be executed.

Final Rangers-Devils Predictions & Picks

The Rangers have been on fire lately. They have been doing everything well. He is scoring more than his season average. They are conceding well below their season average. New Jersey was in the top five in both goals scored and goals against until recently when the Rangers moved up to fifth. They’re not scoring nearly as many goals as they used to, and they’re giving up more goals now. It’s just a matter of two teams going in different directions. They could face off in the playoffs, and it could decide their match-up on home ice, but it goes to the Rangers.

Final Rangers-Devils Prediction & Picks: Rangers +1.5 (-210)
