Odds Barbie vs. Oppenheimer: who will win the ‘Barbenheimer’ showdown?

“Barbenheimer” weekend is here and chances are you’ll have a front row seat to the action at the cinema.

Two of the most anticipated movies of 2023 — “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” — hit theaters on Friday, July 21, setting up a head-to-head showdown between the two blockbusters. And it’s easy to see why gamblers, like moviegoers, join in on the fun.

Both the films bring star power. “Barbie” stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as “Ken.” Will Ferrell is also one of the highest-grossing actors.

‘Oppenheimer’ is written on the other side of the blockbuster. The film stars “Peaky Blinders” actor Cillian Murphy. Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr. and Florence Pugh are other notable actors who join the cast.

With A-list talent like that, it’s no surprise that the audiomakers have established rules as to which movie will be more successful.

Will “Barbie” drop the bomb on “Oppenheimer”? Let’s take a look at the odds for this historic box office matchup, with insight from Fox Sports betting analyst Jason McIntyre:

Barbie: +2500 (Bet $10 to win a total of $260)

Greta Gerwig’s live-action “Barbie” enters the heavyweight contest as a strong contender for box office victory. The romantic comedy has a “PG13” rating, which appeals to a more general audience than Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb biopic “Oppenheimer,” which carries an “R” rating. “Barbie” also has a runtime of 114 minutes, an hour less than “Oppenheimer’s” runtime of 180 minutes.

Based on the past box office history of both directors, it may come as little surprise that “Barbie” is such a favorite. Both of Gerwig’s films were considered box office hits, but “Little Women” remains her highest-grossing film with $218.9 million.

As far as Nolan is concerned, almost all his movies have been box office hits. Five of his six most recent films have grossed over $500 million, three of which have crossed the $1 billion mark. “Inception” and the two films in the “Batman” trilogy exceeded that limit.

“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” are also expected to be hits with critics. Downey Jr. said that “Oppenheimer” was “the greatest film I ever made”.

“Oppenheimer” (+250) currently sits as the favorite to win Best Picture, while “Barbie” (+2500) sits in the middle of the pack. As a film, “Oppenheimer” may have received more critical acclaim, but that didn’t stop “Barbie” from outdoing its opening weekend.

In the end, it looks like The Blonde Bombshell will be riding very “Oppenheimer” in the beginning, but in the long run, “Oppenheimer” will explode with critical acclaim.

Insight from Fox Sports betting analyst Jason McIntyre,

“Barbie” Is Going To Destroy “Oppenheimer” At The Box Office. It would be a result similar to the NBA Finals, when the Nuggets crushed the Heat. The Barbie brand has been dominant for decades and the people behind the movie have taken advantage of every imaginable marketing opportunity.

“Oppenheimer” would be a better movie and might even win an award, but Margot going up against Robbie? It’s like trying to stop Jokic.
