It didn’t take long for the Women’s World Cup opportunities market to be in turmoil. In fact, only two matches were needed to reach a surprising result on the first day of the 32-team tournament.
And it was certainly a delight for the home fans, as New Zealand, co-hosting the tournament with Australia, made an unexpectedly positive start to the tournament by defeating Norway 1–0.
Caesars Sports Deputy Trading Director Adam Pullen and BetMGM Sports Trader Seamus Magee discuss how the first day’s reversals affected World Cup betting.
underdog day
Norway entered the Group A match as -250 favorites ($10 to win a total of $14) in the Group A match on BetMGM’s triple moneyline, where bettors can bet on either team to win in the 90 minutes and stoppage time or for the match to end in a draw. New Zealand, on the other hand, were the underdogs at over +650 (bet $10 to win a total of $75).
“It was quite shocking to start the tournament,” Magee said. “It seems that a disruption of this magnitude is rare in a tournament.”

There was no scoring in the first half, but it didn’t take long when the hosts Football Ferns – nicknamed Team Norway – scored the only goal of the game. In the 48th minute Hannah Wilkinson took a perfect cross from Jackie Hand and headed the ball into the back of the net.
New Zealand held a 1–0 lead for the rest of the period, Norway’s best chance – a shot by Tuva Hansen in the 83rd minute – hitting the crossbar.

Homeland fans enjoyed the disappointment, as did all the discerning punters who saw New Zealand thrashed. Caesars Sports clearly had a lot of customers counting on the big underdog.
When Caesars first posted moneyline odds, New Zealand had +950 odds to win the match, meaning a $100 bet would win $950. By the time the contest began, Caesars’ clients had helped drive the New Zealand price down to +650, while Norway supported -250 and +333.
Pullen said, “As is normal in a major football league, the underdog winning the game does not bode well for the sportsbooks.” “People are enamored of the high cost of deprivation and prefer return on investment. it was a minor loss [for us] With the victory of Varenes over Norway. Not a big deal, but really a good win for the gamblers.”
WynnBet trader Dominic Debonis reiterated Pullen’s comments.
“We were very soundly defeated in the result relative to the handle. “That’s what is expected of the big dogs playing against a team that is not the US women’s national team,” Debonis said.
betmgm beat gamblers
Similarly, New Zealand were trailed by +650 at BetMGM’s odds before kick-off. But the result worked out much better for BetMGM behind the counter, with most tickets and dollars favoring Norway.
“New Zealand was a big winner for us in this competition,” Magee said. “A lot of money came into Norway. new zealand [winning] Broke many parties.
It probably seemed fair to most bookies to throw Norway into the conversation. In the 2019 World Cup, Norway reached the quarter-finals before losing to England. Ahead of Thursday’s opening game, BetMGM had Norway +5000 as their 12th chance to win the World Cup, while New Zealand were at +200000 (200-1) to win the tournament.
Norway will now have to fight to advance from Group A, while New Zealand are currently being favored to win the group. New Zealand are playing their sixth Women’s World Cup, but Thursday’s upset resulted in the team’s maiden World Cup win.
Magee said, “It’s certainly a pleasant surprise for a book on this subject.”
