OpenAI highlights the advanced security measures of the Android app compared to the web version. It also offers features such as syncing of conversation history across devices, similar to the existing iOS app.
By offering native Android and iOS apps, OpenAI competes directly with Microsoft’s Bing Chat, which also uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology. This app serves as an alternative means of testing the Large Language Model (LLM) without relying on a web browser.
The timing of the release coincides with the unveiling of Google’s Bard chatbot and other tech giants’ entry into the AI field. In addition, a number of startups such as Anthropic with Cloud 2 Assistant are fast emerging and provide functionalities that go beyond OpenAI’s paid version of ChatGPT. However, OpenAI’s chatbot saw a drop in traffic in June, the first since its launch.
