Smith ended Michael van Gerwen’s hopes in Sheffield with a sensational 130 checkout on the bullseye.

Smith began his campaign with a 6–4 win over defending champion Van Gerwen, converting a stunning 130 checkout on the bull to defeat the Dutchman for the second week in a row.

The world No 1 continued his charge to beat Clayton in last week’s decider with an average of almost 108 and seal the deal with a superb 11-darter.

Smith then capped off a terrific night of action by claiming the £10,000 winner’s bonus, extending his Premier League winning streak to nine matches in the process.

“Three in a row, it took me 15 weeks to win a night last year and now I’ve won four,” reflected Smith, who leapfrogged van Gerwen into second after his fourth night win overall. “I still have a chance to take the top spot.

“Me and Geis talked about it backstage before the match, if it’s me and him in the finals next week, he’ll come out on top. Hopefully I can come out on top.

“I know you get nothing from taking the top spot, but it’s prestige. I qualified last week and I could just lay down and let anyone beat me. But I’ve still got to play well at the O2.” And need to win.”

Price – who was victorious in Sheffield 12 months ago – retained the top spot after storming into his eighth night final of 2023 with 6-2 wins over Nathan Aspinall and Chris Dobbey.

In the evening’s other quarter-final, Clayton moved two points ahead of Aspinall before his decisive Night 16 performance, courtesy a 6–4 victory against Dimitri Van den Bergh.

The 2021 champions made a brilliant 170 checkout in the middle of the tie and registered their sixth ton-plus average of the campaign to get past the Belgian.

‘The Ferret’ are in a direct shootout with Aspinall for the final spot, with the pair meeting in the quarter-finals next week in Aberdeen.

Victory would assure the Welshman another appearance at the O2, while even if Aspinall wins the quarter-final, it will also have to win its semi-final.

“It’s massive,” Clayton said. “Next week all the pressure is on Nathan. He has to win, the ball is in my court because if I win I lose. I will try to rest and play my game.”

“I was out there shaking like hell. That’s two points that are going to be massive.”

Meanwhile, Dobie consolidated sixth place in the table with an impressive 6–4 success against Peter Wright, crashing out six 180s and reeling four straight legs to lead 4–2.
