Who’s the New Guy on the Vikings?

The Minnesota Vikings had two open roster spots as of Monday morning, bringing the total to 89-man because defender Junior Aho, an international player, does not count toward the 90-man roster limit.

Over the past seven weeks, the Vikings have released Dalvin Cook and John Reed, while signing no replacements.

Well, that changed on Monday, when general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah welcomed tight end Colin Thompson for roster.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted“Former Panthers TE and long snapper Colin Thompson, who spent the last three seasons in Carolina, is signing a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings, per sources.”

The 29-year-old Thompson will now compete for a spot on the roster when the veterans report to training camp on Tuesday.

Given playing time in 2020 and 2021, Thompson has appeared in 26 NFL games over six seasons. At Carolina, he tabbed 1 reception for 7 yards – one touchdown. He has played 284 offensive snaps in his career, including 234 special teams snaps in the long-snapping role referred to by Schefter.

Following the Thompson transaction, these are the Vikings TEs on the active 90-man roster:

  • TJ Hockenson
  • josh oliver
  • johnny mund
  • nick muse
  • ben sims
  • Colin Thompson

Thompson is unlikely to join the 53-man roster on Aug. 29, but stranger things have happened than the former Panther ousting Mundt, Meuse and Sims.

Thompson was teammates at the University of Florida with former Vikings defender Sharif Floyd. After transferring to Temple for 2014–2016, he teamed up with current NFLers Hassan Reddick, Dion Dawkins, Matthew Ioannidis and former Viking Nate Hairston.

He experienced most of his on-the-field action with the 2020 Panthers and tabulated 58.7 pro football focus Category.

The Vikings are expected to sign another player soon after working out nine players over the weekend.

Thompson poked fun at himself via tweet on the Vikings acquisition:
